How to Retouch Eyes with Photoshop
The first step in making your eyes pop? Open them up! This tutorial will show you how to brighten the parts of her eyes that you want to darken and brighten. And then reduce opacity onto each eye, creating more depth and dimension, just like in the movie! Basic photo retouching photoshop techniques will be used to enhance this image and create a realistic effect on an already beautiful subject!
Open Image
In Adobe Photoshop, open your subject’s eyes in a separate layer by right-clicking on it and choosing a duplicate layer. Open another separate layer by clicking on the top menu bar (to be able to choose layers) and clicking on new. This will create a copy of your subject’s original eye photo. Go back to your original photo and delete her eyes.
Adjustment Layers
To start, you’ll want to make sure your subject’s eyes are well-lit. After setting up a clean shot, add an Adjustment Layer of Hue/Saturation on top of your image. Simply click Create New Fill/Adjustment Layer and select Hue/Saturation from the drop-down menu. In the resulting dialog box, alter your sliders until you have something similar to our example here
Dodge & Burn Tools
The Dodge and Burn tools, located in your Tools palette, can help you create more-realistic images by allowing you to selectively lighten or darken areas of an image. These tools take their name from traditional darkroom techniques that are also used for selective lighting and shading.
Adjust Color Balance Section: The Smudge Tool & Perspective Ruler
One of my favorite techniques for using Photoshop is by using a tool that many people forget about. The Smudge Tool can be found in Photoshop under Tools > Brush. The smudge tool acts like a paintbrush, except that it’s controlled by your mouse movements instead of steady strokes. This means you can make precision changes without much effort at all, and that’s exactly what we need!
Gradient Masking
By adding a gradient mask over your eyes, you’ll have more options for toning and brightness. In fact, sometimes it can be easier to add a mask than to play around with individual selections. To do so, simply select an eye on its own layer (Layer > New > Layer via Copy). Then choose any soft brush that fits your desired size.
